Hokonui Fashion Design Awards now in its 24th year, is the longest running event on the New Zealand fashion calendar. Since 1988, the awards have offered amateur designers the chance to showcase their work in front of top fashion experts. Spearheading the judging panel this year will be New Zealand fashion icon Doris de Pont, on her third visit to the Awards. A designer for more than 25 years, Doris retired her label in 2008 and now works as a freelance fashion curator.

This year the 10 finalists, in two categories, took inspiration from the trend ‘Fascinature’ which pays homage to natures diverse shapes, colors and textures. Their interpretation of this trend offered the motivation behind the Creative Colorist and New Talent entries that were received for the competition. Fashion, like art, constantly renews itself, drawing inspiration from images as eclectic as the recent ‘Degas to Dali’ exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery. The exhibition from the National Galleries of Scotland represented the major art movements of the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries, featuring 79 works of art by influential and celebrated artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Ernst, Magritte and Warhol, from the French Impressionist Edgar Degas through to the Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali.

The long wait outside the venue while the crew prepared the backdrop wasn’t enough to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm for what is always one of our most favourite shows. Looking back over a career of highs and lows, punctuated by moments of hilarity, I realise how good hairdressing has been good to me. As a somewhat direction less teenager in the 1960s I was faced with two choices. The NZ Wella Trend Vision Award National final was held 1st August at the Auckland Town Hall. In response to the devastating earthquakes that hit Christchurch late in 2010 and early 2011, the Rodney Wayne Group searched for an effective way to help family, friends and colleagues affected by the natural disasters. On March 19th 2011 all of the Rodney Wayne salons nationwide turned black and red in honour of Christchurch, and collected 10% of each salon’s turnover for the day. Professional theatre offers great opportunities for students to gain valuable hands-on experience. Cut Above students in the ‘Diploma in Makeup’ work as backstage crew for Amici Productions on at least two shows a year. Following on from Cats and 42nd St in 2010, this year the class recently completed the three-week season of Miss Saigon at the Civic Theatre – They then go into preproduction in August for the Amici production of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes – again at the Civic.

Immediately after the February earthquake, Jamie Dryden of Fabrik called other Hamilton salon owners to see if something could be done within the local industry to raise funds for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake. At the Council meeting of the Intercoiffure ‘Order de la Chevalerie’ held in Paris on the 8th of March 2009, IMAGES magazine was awarded the Intercoiffure Mondial Global Press Award for the year 2009. Associated with the catwalks of Paris, New York and Milan, the images of famous fashion photographers, and the advertising campaigns of the most prestigious houses, Odile Gilbert’s work as a hairstylist has been one of the mainstays of the fashion industry for the past decade. Born in Brittany, Odile started her career in 1975 as an apprentice in the Paris studio and salon of the late Bruno Pittini where she learned the basics of the profession.

Guy Mascolo, co-founder of the TONI&GUY salon group, has died suddenly of a heart attack in his home in Dallas on the 6th May aged 65. Guy [Gaetano] together with his brother Toni was the founder of TONI&GUY. Their globally renowned hairdressing company was launched in Clapham in South London in 1963 when the brothers were still in their late teens. The sons of Francesco and Maria Mascolo, the brothers learned their hairdressing skills from their father.

After attending L’Oreal Professional’s Business Forum at the Sheraton 4 points Hotel on Friday we made our way over the bridge to North Ryde where the new Tigi Creative Academy was celebrating its official opening that evening.
