And The Supreme Winner Of The 2011 L’Oréal Colour Trophy Is......

Armie Aninion Avillanosa from Servilles, Takapuna in Auckland has taken out top honours to become New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year 2011 after winning the Supreme Award at the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards in Auckland April 2nd.
Armie was chosen from seven other Supreme Award finalists wowing the judges with an exceptional use of colour, a textured cut and complimentary styling and make-up.
The L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards were judged live by a panel including two top international stylists - Caterina DiBiase of Melbourne and NZ-born, Sydney-based Brad Ngata. There were also four individual judges for make-up, style, photography and fashion elements.
Head judge Caterina DiBiase says Armie’s winning look stood out because it is fashion forward and demonstrates a lovely palette of colour, complimentary to the model.
"Armie used gorgeous soft and warm copper, strawberry and apricot tones to create a mysterious colour that you can’t see where it starts and finishes. We were looking for something that was beautiful top to bottom and Armie achieved this with her commercial look that is highly technical yet still looks effortless.”
Also a judge at the NZ L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards in 2008, Caterina says she is always impressed by the fashion forward work that comes out of New Zealand.
"Stylists here really push the boundaries, which I love. The strong cut and colour trends demonstrated by the winners are reflective of what we’re seeing internationally and showcase the looks we can expect to see this season,” she says.
Runner-up in the Supreme Award was Janic Leech from Servilles, Albany, Auckland.
Two other individual awards and a team award were also announced. The Next Generation Award for a stylist with five years or less experience went to Jamie Hoogduin from Venom in Invercargill while the Men’s Colour Award was presented to Paul Hala from Hala Hair in Auckland.

The Salon of the Year Award went to Servilles, Albany.

Three special Awards were also announced including the People’s Choice Award, the Hairdressing Magazine Award and the Fashion Magazine Award.
The winners were celebrated at an intimate awards ceremony at Sky City directly following the live competition. The smaller ceremony replaced the traditional lavish awards show and after party that was planned, enabling the funds saved to be redirected to assist the more than 50 L’Oréal partner salons affected by the Christchurch earthquake.
L’Oréal Professional Products Division General Manager Gary Marshall says he is thrilled with the high calibre of finalists entries on show at this year’s competition.
"The creative work coming out of New Zealand’s hairdressing industry is something we can all be proud of. The winning looks demonstrate styles that are both cutting edge and wearable.
"The L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards help encourage and recognise this amazing pool of talent we have here in New Zealand. While the lavish awards show was replaced with a more modest affair this year, the kudos that goes along with winning is just as significant. The Supreme Award winner can look forward to huge benefits to her career.”
L’Oréal Colour Trophy is the only hairdressing competition in NZ that requires finalists to go head-to-head in a live competition and re-create their photographic entry on the day of the awards.
The judges score entrants on beautifully executed technical hair colour and technique with a cut that must complement the colour. The overall style must be innovative and fashion–forward with inspired styling and finish.
