It’s Time To Get Your ‘Head Start’ Fix!

It’s finally happened!.. A reality television series about Hair & Beauty. ‘Head Start’ is the name of this new local TV programme, where entrants compete for a full scholarship at New Zealand’s premiere hair and makeup academy. The official launch party took place at Sky City recently with an introduction by Carol Hirschfeld.

The grand prize includes, hair and make up tuition with Cut Above Academy to the value of $18,000, 6 weeks’ work experience in Māori Television’s Makeup Department and 1 year’s supply of Matrix Hair Care products.

Follow 13 hopefuls as they learn and compete against each other for a position in the edgy world of hair and makeup. In an industry famed for its innovation, and A-List personalities. New Zealand’s top hair, makeup, and fashion experts will be looking for one winner.  ‘One star’ who has the raw qualities to forge their own place in our renowned Hair & Beauty industry.

This new Māori Television series will cover the highs and lows, excitement and frustrations of a true competition.  Set hairdressing and makeup tasks will see the contestants learning new skills; then put into demanding situations to perform them.  The challenges will see our rangatahi learning how to apply day, evening, avante garde makeup, style hair, and so much more. 

Our eager hopefuls will then face the prospect of elimination when at the end of each day they stand before the firing squad of judges. The judges will ensure the students receive some honest guidance and feedback, before sending someone home. 

Not only will the audience see a gripping reality competition, they will also learn secrets of some of the country’s top beauty industry professionals. The Judges consist of Bianca Fallon, head of Māori Television’s Hair and Makeup Department and various specialist judges, including Derek Elvy, Mana Dave, Yolanda Bartram, Deb Tan, Wendy Hill and other admired NZ hair, make up and fashion stylists. 

Multi-award winning presenter Mātai Smith needs no introduction. Qantas Media Award winner for Producer of ‘Best Children’s Programme’ 2002 and Air NZ Screen Award winner for Producer of ‘Best Māori Language’ programme 2005. He has the credentials to front this exciting new production.
