Hairdressing Icon Vidal Sassoon dies aged 84 in Los Angeles
Hairdressing icon Vidal Sassoon has died aged 84 after a long illness. Although not confirmed various media organisations have reported that he had been battling leukemia.
Sassoon died at his Mulholland Drive estate, in Los Angeles.
A highly influential figure in the hairdressing and fashion world, in 2010 he starred in a
documentary about his life simply titled: ‘Vidal Sassoon:The Movie’. After opening his first salon in London in 1954 he went on to change the face of hairdressing forever.

You can not have anything but admiration for a label that after starting out over 30 years ago, still remains at the forefront of the New Zealand fashion industry today. Each year they still manage to surprise their devoted followers. This collection was all about colour and a feel of freshness with neon mint tops paired with black and stone jackets and coats. Cobalt blue and dazzling yellow added to the mix.

Front row seats at World... It just does not get any better than that! It was a great atmosphere as we waited with eager anticipation for the show of the week. ‘Good v Evil’ was the moniker for World’s standout event which started with an opening performance by a 3 piece drag group and culminated in the crowning of NZ’s Next Top Model, the last episode broadcasted live.

The long wait outside the venue while the crew prepared the backdrop wasn’t enough to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm for what is always one of our most favourite shows.
Against an impressive American frontier backdrop Trelise Cooper kicked off with her sassy ‘Cooper’ line featuring oversized cowboy hats and denim jackets and jeans.

Sabatini Opens New Zealand Fashion Week
Sabatini kicked off New Zealand Fashion Week, previewing the new Sabatini White winter collection, titled ‘Many Happy Returns’. The show was held at Bellini Bar in the Auckland Hilton with a light breakfast of Champagne and canapés marking 20 years of Sabatini collections.
It was a strong turnout of insiders, family and friends and being the first official event on the NZFW schedule, there were plenty of TV faces: Petra Bagust, Kate Hawkesby, Kate Rodger and Colin Mathura-Jeffree.

The 23rd Hokonui Fashion Design Awards were held recently in Gore. An audience of over 400 watched Friday night’s ‘Strictly Design’ show at the Gore Town and Country Stadium and then on Saturday evening a sell-out crowd of 700 attended the Gala Awards evening.

Looking back over a career of highs and lows, punctuated by moments of hilarity, I realise how good hairdressing has been good to me. As a somewhat direction less teenager in the 1960s I was faced with two choices. My father wanted me to go to university and become a writer, but my mother said ‘learn hairdressing!’

Hair Expo Australia – Charging Ahead For 2012
2011 was another fantastic year for Hair Expo Australia. The premier hairdressing event in the Southern Hemisphere closes for another year and it’s full-steam ahead for 2012, with more than 50 exhibitors already signed up to be part of next year’s show.
10,300 visitors came through the doors at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre in June – up 2.2% on 2010 – with more that one third being salon owners themselves.

Rodney Wayne Salons Dig Deep for Christchurch!
In response to the devastating earthquakes that hit Christchurch late in 2010 and early 2011, the Rodney Wayne Group searched for an effective way to help family, friends and colleagues affected by the natural disasters.
On March 19th 2011 all of the Rodney Wayne salons nationwide turned black and red in honour of Christchurch, and collected 10% of each salon’s turnover for the day. These funds were donated to the 'Adopt A Christchurch Family' Charity.

Immediately after the February earthquake, Jamie Dryden of Fabrik called other Hamilton salon owners to see if something could be done within the local industry to raise funds for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake.

It was a woolly encounter at the Avenal Woolstore in Invercargill recently. The show, I love Invers 2, attracted 400 fashion lovers wanting their first glimpse into the new trends of the coming season. New Zealand fashion label Huffer was the crowd favourite on the night with designer Dan Buckley bringing his cool factor to the catwalk. Proceeds from the event went to the SPCA and Paw Justice. Air New Zealand’s ‘Sky High Shave Flight’ To Queenstown
On Sunday morning the 27th June, Air New Zealand put on a free flight to Queenstown to raise money for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation. Everybody on the flight had agreed to have their heads shaved in order to support the cause and that included the entire flight crew and cabin staff.

L’Oréal brings Global AIDS initiative to NZ

Guy Mascolo’s Sudden Death Leaves Hair World Saddened
Guy Mascolo, co-founder of the TONI&GUY salon group, has died suddenly of a heart attack in his home in Dallas on the 6th May aged 65. Guy [Gaetano] together with his brother Toni was the founder of TONI&GUY. Their globally renowned hairdressing company was launched in Clapham in South London in 1963 when the brothers were still in their late teens. The sons of Francesco and Maria Mascolo, the brothers learned their hairdressing skills from their father.
