Kate Sylvester NZFW: Kahuria Collection

Celebrating 30 years, since inception in 1993 Kate Sylvester has become an iconic New Zealand fashion designer, renowned for her intelligent, feminine designs. Creating timeless clothing that celebrates colour; high quality garments that last a lifetime.

Kate has used archive as inspiration, signatures are celebrated; immaculate shirt dresses, energy suiting, and slinky knitwear find classic KS pairing. Favourite garments from Kate’s current Spring Summer collection are styled with heritage at the forefront. As a special commemoration of 30 years of design, Kate has created “KSwan’ a capsule of bespoke garments to sit alongside her Spring collection.

Femininity and romanticism imbue each garment, a sheer slip dress with grosgrain panelling, follies with delicate lace trims sit alongside a buttery soft jersey embroidered with a giant Kswan motif. Hints of leatherette appear layered as bikini tops and knickers and, in a nod to couture and construction, toiles and petticoats become outer-wear in calico with raw edges.

Hair Director Sean Mahoney created two looks, Modern Knot and Modern Ponytail. “As this is a 30-year mile stone for Kate Sylvester, I wanted to create looks that would show what I see a Kate Sylvester girl is. She is strong, beautiful, feminine and tough so I made this look with the contemporary clean ponytail, the strong twisted knot with ends out and enhanced natural curl patterns. With such great casting and by truly wanting to celebrate everyone’s beautiful and unique textures, we highlight that the Kate Sylvester girl is an individual.” said Sean Mahoney.

Modern Knot

  1. Apply a liberal amount of Oribe Imperial Blowout from roots to tips.
  2. In 2-inch sections, smooth the hair using a boar bristle brush and your hair dryer in a downward motion. Stretch and polish the ends.
  3. Section your hair 4 inches deep from temple to temple. Apply Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray to the roots. Brush in an upward motion away from the face to create volume.
  4. Use a Boar bristle brush to smooth hair back into a low ponytail, secure tightly with elastic, leaving a long end of your elastic free for step four.
  5. Twist the ponytail until its tight, applying Oribe Flash Form Finishing Spray Wax as you go to create a smooth, controllable foundation for your knot.
  6. Twist into a knot with the ends of the hair left out to create a fan effect, fasten the base of the knot with the remaining elastic.

Modern Ponytail

  4. Brush in an upward motion away from the face to create volume.
  5. Use a Boar bristle brush to smooth hair back into a low ponytail, secure tightly with elastic.
  6. Apply an inch of wig tape to the base of the ponytail and wrap the remaining elastic flat around the tape.
  7. Finish off with a bobby pin underneath the tie to fasten.
