On Monday evening 29th July, one of the most anticipated hair launches took place at Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland with the long awaited arrival of the Dyson Supersonic™ professional hairdryer! Stylists came from all over New Zealand to attend and witness for themselves this ground breaking new salon tool.

Dyson also took this opportunity to introduce their Airwrap™ Styler as well.

Onstage Dyson Ambassadors Jayne Wild, Renya Xydis, Michael Beel and Frank Apostolopoulous presented a spectacular hair show which demonstrated the versatility and capabilities of these amazing new professional hair dressing tools from Dyson.

And as we have come to expect from all Dyson products, the heart and soul of everything that they do lies in their advanced innovative motor technology.

After the show all the Dyson Ambassadors mingled with the crowd to further chat about the products. We managed to corner both Michael Beel and Frank Apostolopoulous and here is what they had to say…

Can you please explain why you think the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer professional edition should be the go-to hair dryer for stylists?

Michael Beel: Ultimately it’s about hair health. The way the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer professional edition blow-dries hair at a low temperature and at a higher speed, in my opinion it helps keep the integrity of the hair, helps stop colour fading, and makes your blow-dry style last longer. You should not be using anything else but the Dyson Supersonic™ Pro if you are a professional hairdresser.

Frank Apostolopoulous: It’s a brand new medium, and I find it’s now providing healthier and more gentle results. The finish is incredible, and we’re truly seeing the natural character of the hair come out as opposed to something that’s really forced and contrived. It’s also great for a more natural-finish, and also for the quality and health of hair.

How does the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer professional edition set itself apart from other hair dryers on the market?

Michael Beel: The Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer professional edition prioritises hair health enabling you to create amazing styles with fast, precise airflow rather than extreme heat.

I find this leaves your hair feeling a lot more luscious and giving it more shine. The machine has been engineered to protect the integrity of the hair using intelligent heat control, the temperature of the airflow is measured 40 times a second to prevent extreme heat damage and protect natural shine which is incredible!

Frank Apostolopoulous: For many reasons. It’s balanced, easier to use and much more compact and lighter than conventional hair dryers.

I find it’s also a lot less damaging for your hair as it’s more gentle and creates beautiful and natural results. The attachments are fantastic. The Professional concentrator has a stricter finish, and the smoothing nozzle has more of a natural airflow through it.

My favourite attachment which I use the most is the diffuser, and by far it’s the best diffuser I’ve ever used in my 26 years of hairdressing. I’m addicted to it!

Does the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer professional edition perform well in the salon, is it quieter than the average hair dryer?

Michael Beel: Absolutely, it’s quieter than conventional hair dryers, you’re now able to talk to your clients and won’t be able to give the “yeah, ah-hah”. The Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer professional edition prioritises hair health and prevents the damage that extreme heat can have on hair.

It also helps avoid the colour fading, helps make your style last longer, and is what the industry has been waiting for!

Frank Apostolopoulous: In my experience, the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer professional edition is a lot quieter, and it’s a lot gentler in the finishes it creates. It sounds so much quieter, but it’s more powerful, so we get a quicker result.

Do you think that the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer offers value for money and why?

Michael Beel: It is a long term investment, but as every good stylist knows you need to spend money on the best styling technologies possible.

Dyson invested £100 million on the development of the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer and Dyson Airwrap™ styler including state of the art laboratories to research the science of hair, so you can be confident you’re getting value for money!

The hair dryer hadn’t changed since the 60s, so the technology and engineering that Dyson has put into this machine is well worth the investment.

Frank Apostolopoulous: I definitely feel it provides value for money. Even though it might cost more than a conventional hair dryer, if you really think about the quality and health of the hair that you get from it, and how conditioning it is, you’re going to spend less money on trying to treat extreme heat damage from conventional dryers which is irreversible.

Over time, when you think about cost per use, and how well the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer performs over time, I recommend investing. Sometimes you might buy a fragrance that costs the same amount, but that’ll only last for a few months. It’s definitely worth it.

What has been your clients’ reaction to the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer, have they noticed the difference?

Michael Beel: Ultimately, they were like, “What is that? It looks stylishly cool! I need that in my bathroom!” I’ve been lucky enough to have the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer professional edition for nearly a year now, and I notice the difference in my clients’ hair health when I see them every six weeks, it’s huge.

I find the colour-fade is less, they’re getting more fine-tuned blow dries, and they’re maintaining healthier hair. It’s all about the healthy, shiny, beautiful, luxurious hair that the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer produces.

Frank Apostolopoulous: It’s funny you ask that, I now don’t even have to talk about it! The minute that I use it and by the time I have finished with the blow dry, they’re telling me all the things they’ve noticed that is different and better. They’re coming back to me and educating me on the Dyson Supersonic™ hairdryer.

It’s been amazing, the clients who have bought one have seen first-hand why it’s worth the investment.

How about the Dyson Airwrap™ styler, what are your impressions of that?

Michael Beel: The Dyson Airwrap™ styler is also a great versatile tool for clients to get salon-looking hair at home. We hear so many times “I can never do it as well as you!”

But with the Dyson Airwrap™ styler, it’s changing the game – clients are telling me they’re able to achieve the styles they want at home with the amazing attachments.

Frank Apostolopoulous: I love it for its hair health and styling qualities and all of the attachments it comes with, including the pre-styling dryer which prepares the hair to be the ideal moisture level before using the curling barrels, that’s around 80% dry.

Plus, there are two different sized curling barrels which can create different types of curls. It’s so versatile, you can go strict with curl, or put a little bit of wearable movement into the hair. Typically for me, I’m not someone who uses it for a lot of strict curls, I tend to use the Dyson Airwrap™ styler for putting texture into the hair and putting movement and wave into it.

In your opinion is the Dyson Airwrap™ styler a tool that all salons should have?

Michael Beel: Absolutely! It’s a tool that is really versatile, this one tool can curl, wave, smooth, and give volume. It really is an all-round tool helps you create some amazing looks.

Frank Apostolopoulous: In my opinion, yes! It’s great because you can do so many things with it for so many different hair types, from smoothing to getting curls and waves. It’s crazy that a salon wouldn’t have it. This is a new way of styling, and a much healthier tool to be using on your hair.

Can you give us an example of a particular hairstyle that is best suited for the Dyson Airwrap™ styler?

Michael Beel: It can do any style, really! Any hair works with the Dyson Airwrap™ styler, whether you’ve got thick hair that you want to smooth out or if you’ve got really baby-fine hair that you want to create volume in, or even create a Victoria’s Secret wave, it can do it all! You can achieve all of these things with this seriously versatile styling tool.

Frank Apostolopoulous: I love the Dyson Airwrap™ Styler for lived-in-looking hair. I love to use the soft or firm smoothing brushes prior to putting a beautiful curl in the hair.

Then, I love grabbing random spots and just putting some unexpected movement in. It’s not always about putting really strict curls into it, but just putting a bit of character into the hair and something that squashes the hair into a bit of shape.
